CAPE COD EYE DOCTOR- NEW GLAUCOMA INSTRUMENT

Today we just picked up a new glaucoma instrument, THE GDX VCC!

The GDx VCC is the only glaucoma detection technology available that directly and objectively evaluates the nerve fiber layer of the eye.
The test is fast and comfortable for your patient.

While the three most common tests for glaucoma (IOP evaluation, visual field analysis, and optic nerve evaluation) are useful, they often do not detect glaucoma early enough.
The GDx VCC is the only glaucoma detection technology available that directly and objectively evaluates the nerve fiber layer of the eye. This test is comfortable, does not require drops or pupil dilation and provides results for both eyes within 3 minutes.
Breakthrough Technology
Now . . . early, accurate detection of retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) damage in just 3 minutes with breakthrough scanning laser ophthalmoscope technology that measures the extent of glaucoma damage where it occurs -- at the RNFL.
Early diagnosis
• Retinal nerve fiber layer damage is present up to 6 years before visual field damage.
True diagnosis
• Measurements are compared to a normative database to provide quick, easy and objective analysis.
• Test parameters do not rely on questionable risk factors for glaucoma.
• Nerve fiber analysis with polarimetry shows early damage caused by glaucoma.
• Optic nerve head analysis can’t always differentiate anatomical cupping from cupping resulting from glaucoma.
Fast diagnosis
• Less than 1 second to image
• Exam in just minutes
• No dilation required
Continual diagnosis and follow-up
• Typical image reproducibility of better than 15 µm allows precise, accurate follow-up of change over time.
• Serial analysis printout clearly shows specific areas of disease progression.

We are proud to offer all our patients this technology!

CAPE COD EYE DOCTOR FACT: COMPUTER EYESTRAIN

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS)Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is a very real problem for many people who spend hours daily in front of a computer screen.

Sometimes, simply rearranging your work environment to create better ergonomics is all you may need to do to reduce eye strain and other vision problems related to CVS. In some cases, a good pair of computer eyeglasses may help you see better at just the right distance range needed for viewing a computer screen. If you are doing many hours of computer work a day, a separate pair of glasses may be a great option.

Ask to have an eye evaluation today to help you meet your computer vision needs.

CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST- DIABETIC EYE CARE

A CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST FACT

Eye Care for People With Diabetes
Eye care is especially important for people with diabetes because they are at increased risk of developing eye complications from the disease. In fact, diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in adults age 20 to 74.

All people with diabetes should take precautions to help reduce their risk of developing eye problems. Here are some eye care tips.

1.Schedule yearly appointments with your eye doctor so that any eye problem can be detected early and treated.
2.Maintain control of your blood glucose levels.

4.Get your blood cholesterol levels under control.
5.Eat a healthy diet.
6.Avoid smoking.
7.Exercise regularly.
When Should I Call the Eye Doctor?

Maui Jim Sunglasses - History
Centuries ago, early Hawaiians followed the rhythm of the waves and the position of the sun to get from island to island. Today, this wayfaring, is kept alive by Hawaiians who still believe the sun can guide them in their journeys. At Maui Jim Sunglasses, we also take our cues from the sun. We're experts in finding ways to reveal all the colors of a sun-centered lifestyle, while protecting you from the effects of harsh glare. The Maui Jim Sunglasses destination is a place of beauty you've never seen before.

The Maui Jim Sunglasses PolarizedPlus technology was born from this sun-centered lifestyle. No other sunglass offers the same level of visual acuity, protection and color enhancement as the technology in Maui Jim Sunglasses. Maui Jim answers the ancient challenge of glare like no one else. Three elements in the Maui Jim Sunglasses multi-layer PolarizedPlus lens design ensure a complete solution to glare. With glare out of the way, more usable light is transmitted to the eyes for the best visual acuity, contrast and color.

The Maui Jim Stainless Steel Collection features a rimless design and hinge system that brings together style and performance in one tight package. It's perfect for those who prefer lightweight Maui Jim Sunglasses in a sturdy frame package with a rimless design and hinge system and superior optics.

The Flexon frame on the Maui Jim Sunglasses is made from a bendable "memory" metal. This frame is lighter and keeps its shape longer than traditional metal frames.

Maui Jim Sunglasses - Understanding Light
To really understand the importance of Maui Jim Sunglasses, it helps to know how light works, what happens when it hits your eyes and how Maui Jim Sunglasses technology can work for you.

Glare is everywhere, even on hazy days.

Maui Jim Sunglasses - There are three kinds of Glare
Reflected Glare: Caused by light waves reflected from flat, smooth or shiny surfaces. When the light waves vibrate together horizontally, this creates polarized light - which in turn creates blinding hot spots that are uncomfortable, distracting and sometimes dangerous.

Direct Glare: Bright light emanating from a direct source, most often the sun or overhead lights.

Bounce-Back Glare: This glare originates from light beside or behind you that is reflected off your sunglasses and into you eyes. If you've ever seen your eyelashes reflected in your sunglasses, then you've seen bounce-back glare.

Maui Jim Sunglasses - Combating Glare
So how do you combat glare and its dangerous effects? Non-polarized sunglasses don't actually eliminate glare, they only tint it, leaving it just as intense and dangerous. Ordinary polarization only blocks horizontally reflected glare.

Maui Jim Sunglasses with PolarizedPlus® technology block horizontally reflected glare plus glare from above, below and behind the lens. Since nature didn't polarize the lenses in our eyes, Maui Jim sunglasses provide the next best thing.

There's more to our Maui Jim Sunglasses lenses than meets the eye: patented multilayer technology protects your vision, as well as your sunglass investment.

Maui Jim Sunglasses - Eye Protection
All Maui Jim Sunglasses block UVA and UVB up to 400nm and are blue light and infrared effective. Maui Jims meet American, Australian, and European transmittance standards related to traffic signal recognition requirements.

Maui Jim Sunglasses - PolarizedPlus® Lens Technology
Every pair of Maui Jim sunglasses has the patented PolarizedPlus® lens technology.

Maui Jim Sunglasses Waterproof Coating: Sheds water and snow, makes cleaning easy.

Maui Jim Sunglasses Bi-Gradient Coating: Eliminates overhead and reflected glare.

Maui Jim Sunglasses CLEARSHELL(TM): Proprietary scratch-resistant coating guards against scratches (polycarbonate only).

Maui Jim Sunglasses Lens: Optically correct glass or lightweight, impact-resistant polycarbonate.

Maui Jim Sunglasses Polarizing Film: Absorbs harsh reflected glare.

Maui Jim Sunglasses Anti-Reflective Treatment: Absorbs "bounce-back" glare and reduces eye fatigue.

CAPE COD EYE DOCTOR -LASIK EYE SURGERY

CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST FACT:

About LASIK
LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon folds back the flap, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser. The flap is then laid back in place, covering the area where the corneal tissue was removed.

With nearsighted people, the goal of LASIK is to flatten the too-steep cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. LASIK can also correct astigmatism by smoothing an irregular cornea into a more normal shape.

If you are considering LASIK eye surgery, your first step is to see if you are a candidate for the surgery. We will examine your eyes to determine their health, what kind of vision correction you need, and how much laser ablation (corneal tissue removal) is required. If you are thinking of LASIK, make an appointment at our office for a consultation.

CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST- CONTACT LENS EMERGENCY

Cape Cod Optometrist Fact:

A Marstons Mills woman came into the office with a contact lens emergency! She was considering LASIK and the ophthalmologist office off Cape Cod fitted her with contact lenses to demonstrate monovision. They showed her very quickly on the techniques of insertion and removal. They only had her try it once. In my office we require patients to put them in and remove 3 times before they can leave with their contact lenses. She came in yesterday afternoon with an irritated eye with a broken blood vessel hemorrhage in her conjunctiva. I assured her that she was fine and discussed her options. We are going to revisit a new bifocal/multifocal contact lens fitting. She will probably hold off on LASIK for the time being. In her situation the bifocal contact lenses will offer her more options than the monovision. She should do well and be very happy in the next week to come.

CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST- DO YOU HAVE GLAUCOMA?

A CAPE COD OPTOMETRIST FACT:

DID YOU KNOW...

Glaucoma is a very misunderstood disease. Often, people don’t realize the severity or who is affected. We hope the following information is helpful to you.

Four Key Facts About Glaucoma
Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness
Glaucoma can cause blindness if it is left untreated. And unfortunately approximately 10% of people with glaucoma who receive proper treatment still experience loss of vision.

There is no cure (yet) for glaucoma
Glaucoma is not curable, and vision lost cannot be regained. With medication and/or surgery, it is possible to halt further loss of vision. Since glaucoma is a chronic condition, it must be monitored for life.

Diagnosis is the first step to preserving your vision.

Everyone is at risk for glaucoma
Everyone is at risk for glaucoma from babies to senior citizens. Yes, older people are at a higher risk for glaucoma but babies can be born with glaucoma (approximately 1 out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States).

Young adults can get glaucoma, too. African-Americans in particular are susceptible at a younger age.

There may be no symptoms to warn you
With open angle glaucoma, the most common form, there are virtually no symptoms. Usually, no pain is associated with increased eye pressure.

Vision loss begins with peripheral or side vision. You may compensate for this unconsciously by turning your head to the side, and may not notice anything until significant vision is lost. The best way to protect your sight from glaucoma is to get tested. If you have glaucoma, treatment can begin immediately.

Some Statistics About Glaucoma
Sources are listed at the bottom of this page.

It is estimated that over 4 million Americans have glaucoma but only half of those know they have it. (1)

Approximately 120,000 are blind from glaucoma, accounting for 9% to 12% of all cases of blindness in the U.S. (2)

About 2% of the population ages 40-50 and 8% over 70 have elevated IOP.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness among African-Americans. (2)

Glaucoma is 6 to 8 times more common in African-Americans than Caucasians. (3)

African-Americans ages 45-65 are 14 to 17 times more likely to go blind from glaucoma than Caucasians with glaucoma in the same age group.

The most common form, Open Angle Glaucoma, accounts for 19% of all blindness among African-Americans compared to 6% in Caucasians. (4)

Other high-risk groups include: people over 60, family members of those already diagnosed, diabetics, and people who are severely nearsighted.

Estimates put the total number of suspected cases of glaucoma at around 65 million worldwide. (5)
